Comedian and personality Wayne Brady is the creator and executive producer of an upcoming reality show which is certain to raise a few eyebrows. "America's Next Sellout" will focus on twelve black men who will be gauged by their ability to perform tasks and engage in lifestyle choices deemed "sellout" by the Black community. Brady, who has long been a darling of the white community while receiving a lukewarm reception by African Americans, was inspired by his own life.
"I married a non-Black woman; I've got a mixed race child; I’ve spent most of my career doing what some would consider to be 'shucking and jiving' and I’ve made a lot of money at it. Now I want to dig deeper into why I and other black men feel the need to go off the beaten path into the brave world of the 'sellout'," says Brady. "I am also going to be composing and singing the theme song, which is tentatively titled 'Sold Out', to the tune of Akon’s 'Locked Up'."
"Next Sellout" will include such activities as sending the men into a largely Black town to find one of several non-Black women to date, a make-over segment where the men are given flat tops and penny loafers, and pairing the men with a dialect coach to teach them how to remove all traces of Black vernacular from their speech. Guest coaches will include prominent athletes, lawyers and other successful African American businessmen who have traveled the path of the stereotypical sell-out; it is rumored that O.J. Simpson and Bryant Gumbel will serve as judges on the show.
