Swine flu makes a foolproof excuse for slackers |
Posted on 2009-10-19 |
| We've been told day after day that millions of Americans are going to be battered by the H1N1 virus this flu season - and now the germ is spreading so fast that even the nation's top health officials have quit keeping track of the number of cases.
For a diabolical few, all of this raises the question: Who would ever know if you faked it?
After all, government officials - and even the president himself - have admonished us to stay home if we're sick.
Companies and campuses across the country have been told to prepare for more sick days than usual; in fact, one flu-fearing ...continued |

HOW YA LIVIN'?: |
Posted on 2009-05-26 |
| A little spin today on our How Ya Livin' with a recap of this year’s UCLA Jazz and Reggae Festival; on Sunday with a line up of De La Soul (who performed hits like “Me, Myself & I”, “Saturday” and Pothouls In My Lawn“); after some 15 plus years, De La still knows how to rock a crowd and was the perfect segue to headliner Erykah Badu! She took command of the stage on appearance alone, dressed in grey hoodie top with a Jewish black brim hat, tight patent leather pants and 5 inch heels, Erykah kicked off the set with some funky sounds and songs from her latest album "Nu AmErykah" to classic trac...continued |

Mexican Data Show Migration to U.S. in Decline |
Posted on 2009-05-19 |
| MEXICALI, Mexico - Census data from the Mexican government indicate an extraordinary decline in the number of Mexican immigrants going to the United States.
The recently released data show that about 226,000 fewer people emigrated from Mexico to other countries during the year that ended in August 2008 than during the previous year, a decline of 25 percent. All but a very small fraction of emigration, both legal and illegal, from Mexico is to the United States.
Because of surging immigration, the Mexican-born population in the United States has grown steeply year after year since the ...continued |

HOW YA LIVIN’?: |

| If you’re a person of color – especially a Black person - your unemployment rate is likely to be double that of everyone else. For example, while the overall unemployment rate in California is approaching ten percent, the unemployment rate in cities like Compton are between 18 and 20%. Blacks and Hispanics were mostly employed in construction and manufacturing jobs - sectors that were hardest hit by the recession. Black teenagers are also finding it difficult to get a job, with an unemployment rate of nearly 40%. Our advice – stay in school, and get training in recession proof fields like heal...continued |

HOW YA LIVIN’?: |

| You’re livin’ with a fouler mouth - because of economic trouble? L.A. psychotherapist Nancy Irvin says hard times are making you cuss more, due to feelings of being out of control: “Swearing is something that gives us an instantaneous release.” While not everyone swears, studies indicate that those who do say 80 to 90 expletives, out of about 15,000 words spoken daily. However, Irvin adds: “If you can’t get through one paragraph without swearing, you need to start expanding your vocabulary. You [may] have some anger issues that you need to get a grip on.” |

| You’re living with less sleep and an increased chance for heart attacks – due to the time change? A recent study found that when the time changes in the fall, heart attacks decrease by 5% with the extra hour of sleep. However, the opposite is the true in the spring; the lost hour results in a 5% increase in heart attacks. It’s not all bad, though – more daylight also means more physical activity and fewer car accidents.

| If you're living in a conservative - or "red" -state, you're more likely to consume online pornography. A recent study found Utah (gasp!) leads the way with the most online porn subscriptions per 1000 broadband users; eight of the top 10 porn loving states voted for John
McCain last year. Adult escort sites are more popular in "blue" states that
voted for Kerry in 2004, while visitors from the "red" states are more likely to visit swinger sites, adult webcams, and sites about
voyeurism.

College Professors Rally To Drop Legal Drinking Age |
Posted on 2008-08-19 |
| RALEIGH, North Carolina - College presidents from about 100 of the best-known U.S. universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.
The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the U.S. drinking age, which is among the highest in the world.
"This is a law that is routinely evaded," said John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in ...continued |
